But even if you don’t really notice them, you might sense it if something has subtly changed. That’s a feeling some people have had in recent weeks when they turn on their Microsoft Word programs. After 17 years of Calibri as Word’s default typeface, many users suddenly found themselves typing in a new typeface called Aptos. Letters are letters, but for designers and typography fans, they matter a lot.

Microsoft announced this week that it's changing its default Office font to Aptos. Microsoft Office users may notice that their documents look different. Microsoft announced this week that it's replacing Calibri, its default font for the last 15 years, with a new font, Aptos. Aptos will officially become the default font for all customers in the upcoming months. Microsoft said that changes to its default font were needed to adapt its suite of Microsoft Office tools to higher resolution screens as technology continues to evolve.

Microsoft has named the next default font for its productivity applications, such as Word and Outlook, after testing five candidates it introduced in 2021. Aptos will remain available in the font list under the old Bierstadt name for people who are accustomed to it. In 2019, Microsoft asked font designer Steve Matteson to develop a font in the grotesque sans-serif style that includes the classic Helvetica. The company didn't let on that it was considering it as a possible successor for Calibri, Matteson said in an interview with CNBC this week. Some people didn't take the name seriously, and Microsoft decided to come up with a new one for the font, Matteson said.
